Why a special substrate?
Trees in urban areas grow under much more difficult conditions than in nature. Compacted or sealed soils restrict root penetration, water can only be stored to a limited extent and nutrients are often not available in sufficient quantities. Conventional soils also quickly lose their structure, which leads to waterlogging, a lack of oxygen and poor root development.
Specialised tree substrates provide a remedy here: they combine high load-bearing capacity with permanent root penetration, ensure a stable water and air balance and supply the trees with nutrients in the long term. In this way, urban trees can grow healthily and develop sustainably even under the stress of traffic, narrow planting pits or sealed surfaces.

Construction method 1 and 2 according to FLL: What is the difference?
Construction method 1
For open planting pits and less polluted locations
In construction method 1, the tree substrate is used in areas that are not built over or only subject to low levels of stress. Typical examples are open planting pits, unsealed areas or parks. The focus here is on high root penetration and optimum growth conditions for the trees. The substrate creates a loose, well-ventilated root space and supports healthy, permanently stable tree growth.
Construction method 2
For overbuilt and polluted areas
Construction method 2 is intended for locations subject to heavy mechanical stress, such as under pavements, roads, car parks or squares. Here, the tree substrate must be both load-bearing and rootable. High requirements in terms of density, grain grading and settlement resistance ensure that the surface can be reliably loaded without restricting the development of the trees. This creates a stable substrate that also provides vital vegetation areas for urban trees.
